Web Design Degree Programs in New York (A-L)

There are a number of accredited web design degree programs in New York. Selecting which of them offers the best fit in terms of training, location, and job potential after program completion can be something of a challenge; there are many, each makes available large amounts of data about itself and many schools offer different kinds of information about themselves and the programs they host. The information below is offered in the hopes of making that challenge easier to meet and conquer. It provides descriptions and contact information for several programs as well as information about the academic units housing them.

Baruch College

Division of Continuing and Professional Studies

The Division of Continuing and Professional Studies at Baruch College, a component of the City University of New York system, was established in 1978 to offer continuing education programs to New Yorkers and people from around the world. Classes taught by industry leaders and professionals are offered in traditional, hybrid and online formats and seek to align with demonstrated market needs. Students are thus equipped to handle the changing demands of the workplace and to make themselves more fully engaged participants in the increasingly globalized world. Customized corporate training programs are also available.

Digital Design Certificate: Web Design

The Division offers a certificate program in Digital Design focused in Web Design. It seeks to offer students solid grounding in the creation and upkeep of interactive web graphics and web pages; it differs from the associated Graphic Design certificate in focusing entirely on online media. The cost of the certificate as of August 2014 was $2,759; paying for curses individually would cost $3,032 at the same time. The program requires courses in portfolio management (which helps in securing employment or better employment once the certificate is complete), several Adobe programs (Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Dreamweaver and basic and advanced courses in Flash) and website building in HTML. Extension and further refinement of skills is available in advanced classes such as Advanced Photoshop and Advanced Dreamweaver, so the certificate is not necessarily the end of learning for students who seek to improve their skills in designing web materials.

Brooklyn College

Department of Computer and Information Science

The Department of Computer and Information Science at Brooklyn College, a component of the City University of New York system, prepares students to enter fields such as robotics, software engineering, computer education, network computing, information systems and bioinformatics. It does so through such undergraduate majors and minors as Business Information Systems, Computational Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Systems, Multimedia Computing, Parallel and Distributed Computing and Cognitive Science. Hofstra University

Continuing Education

Hofstra University Continuing Education offers programs in lifelong learning, personal enrichment and professional development to the people of Long Island, New York, and nearby communities. Corporate training programs are available, as are pre-college and sports journalism institutes and programs for retirees and youth. Programs are designed to appeal to broad audiences, making them accessible to learners at all levels of prior preparation. Notably, continuing education students have privileges in the Hofstra University library, allowing them access to high-level research materials and emergent best understandings of distinguished scholars. Individualized tutoring is available, as well, for an additional fee.

Web Site Development Certificate

On offer, among many others, is a Web Site Development Certificate program that requires six courses: five prescribed and one elective. Prescribed courses in HTML Programming, Cascading Sytle Sheets, introductory and advanced JavaScript and HTML 5-based web development ground students in the fundamentals of web design, equipping them to enhance their own web presences and those of the agencies for which they work. Elective courses in Adobe Photoshop, introductory and advanced Flash, introductory and advanced Dreamweaver, ASP.Net, C# and VB.Net allow students to specialize their continuing educations to best fit their immediate personal and business needs. Loosely defined prerequisites allow both for sequential learning through course offerings and for application of lived experience to the certificate program. Average cost per course is $745; some courses are well away from the average, and some discounts are available (such as for early registration). Courses tend to run from two to three weeks.

Advanced Web Site Development Certificate

Also on offer is an Advanced Web Site Development Certificate Program that explicitly builds upon the knowledge and skills developed in the Web Site Development Certificate discussed above. Fortunately, this means that the courses taken to earn the earlier certificate need not be repeated. Instead, the student will take an additional three classes from among those offered as electives, classes in in Adobe Photoshop, introductory and advanced Flash, introductory and advanced Dreamweaver, ASP.Net, C# and VB.Net. Completing them awards the advanced certificate, reflecting a superior level of knowledge and allowing for greater enhancement of students’ personal and professional web presences. Average cost per course is higher than with the earlier certificate; the less expensive coursework is the foundational. Course lengths typically remain two to three weeks.

Web Site Programming Certificate

An additional offering is a Web Site Programming Certificate that equips students to design and develop websites and databases and to create dynamic content from a back-end database. Thus equipped, they are likely to be able to enhance their personal and professional web presences and to be of great value to employers who need additional expertise in their online business ventures. Earning the certificate requires completion of eight courses; unlike the two development certificates, the program is wholly prescribed, although many courses are similar. Courses are HTML Programming; Introduction to JavaScript; Advanced JavaScript; Introduction to Database Design and SQL Programming; Introduction to Microsoft SQL Server; Advanced Microsoft SQL Server; Developing Web Applications with ASP,NET, C# and VB.Net and Advanced ASP.Net. Average cost per course in the program is just over $800, with some courses far away from average. Courses tend to run from two to three weeks.
