Digital Graphics Design Program

This publicly supported postsecondary school has a student body of 2550 students. The website says that any associate degree earned at the school will transfer to a Maine college or university if the student desires to pursue a higher degree. There are several satellite campuses located throughout the area for the convenience of the student. The school boasts a new facility with an art gallery and a child care facility that serves as a learning lab for the early childhood education program. Programs may be taken part-time or full-time with many classes offered in the evenings.

Associate in Applied Science Digital Graphic Design

The learning outcome objective of this associate degree is to give students skills and knowledge and help them build problem-solving strategies and envision projects from beginning to end, in their full scope. The school also endeavors to teach time management and organization. Students entering this program must have an Associate of Applied Science degree and a certificate in Algebra I. There are 61 to 63.5 credits in the two-year Associate of Applied Science program and 30 to 30.5 in the one-year Digital Graphic certificate. Some of the classes include in the certificate are: Two Dimensional Design, Introduction to Digital Photography and Digital Illustration. Tuition is $88 per credit hour plus departmental fees. IN addition, students who enroll in the digital photography class are required to purchase a single lens reflex digital camera.

Maine College of Art

Graphic Design

The Maine College of Art was founded in 1882. It is located in Portland, which was voted a top ten art town and also America’s most livable city. The small school; has a student –to-faculty ratio of 10:1 and features an “Artists at Work” program that encourages mentorship of students with working artists. The goal of the school is to help students not only make art, but to make money at art. In 1996, the school was one of only 34 in the country to receive funds for energy-efficient renovation and preservation of a historic building, the Porteous, Mitchell and Braun Department Store which now houses several studios. The tuition for the school is $15,470 per semester.

Bachelor of Fine Arts: Graphic Design

The school website says that there are two elements you must know about a project: How to turn an idea into an image and what can you bring to it as an artist. Students in this degree program are taught how to strip a concept down to its basic components. They learn about the psychology of audiences and how they are affected by color and design, and develop broad skill sets. Classes are small (20 is typical) and students usually complete the 120 credit hour program by taking from 12 to 18 credit hours per term (usually 15). There are 30 credits of liberal arts and 75 studio credit hours. Students also take 15 hours of art history. Prerequisites for the degree program are six credits in graphic design and two introductory classes to the major.

University of Maine at Augusta

College of Professional Studies

This school was founded in 1965. It has a student body of 5,652. The school seeks to be accessible to non-traditional and working adult students with multiple campus locations and some online classes. It offers 18 degree programs and is ranked by US News and World Report for the online bachelor degree programs. Classes are taught in multi-media classrooms with face-to-face instruction, online delivery, video streaming and other innovative teaching methods. University of Maine at Fort Kent

Computer Applications Program

This school was ranked at number 39 in the US News and World Reports Best Regional Colleges. It is small, with a student body of only 1073 and is on the semester system. The goal of the program is to “give students a clear and deep understanding” of design, development, implementation, maintenance and use of computer technologies. It also stresses ethics in information n-state tuition is $7515 per semester. Out-of-state tuition for the school is $17,535.

Bachelor of Science in Computer Application: Web Development

This 120 credit-hour program follows the general guidelines for graduation with a bachelor of science degree. Besides the liberal arts and university-required classes, there are 45 semester hours in 300 level classes or higher for the concentration. The first year there is an introductory class to computer science and one to information technology, plus a university requisite of a first-year college experience course. University of Southern Maine

Computer Science

The university was founded in 1878 and there are 7, 407 students enrolled at the school. The semester-based university was rated in the second tier of US News and World Reports “Best Colleges” list.
